How to Choose a Wool Tallit Katan

How to Choose a Wool Tallit Katan

Quick answer

To choose a wool tallit katan, pick your tying custom first (Ashkenazi, Chasidish, Sephardi or Chabad), then one or two holes, then thin or thick hand-spun strings, and finally the size. Look for a garment that is 100% wool, made and tied under reliable rabbinic supervision.

Step 1: your tying custom

The garment can look almost the same; the difference is how the strings are wound and knotted. Choose the tying that matches your family's minhag:

Custom What to look for Our wool option
Ashkenazi / Chasidish Windings of 7, 8, 11 and 13; Chasidish usually in groups (chulyot), often through two holes Badatz wool tallit katan, Chasidish tying
Sephardi Windings of 10, 5, 6 and 5, often with thick hand-spun strings Badatz wool tallit katan, Sephardi tying
Chabad Tied according to Chabad custom (Arizal) Chabad lamb wool tallit katan

Step 2: one hole or two

Each corner has one or two reinforced holes for the strings. Many Chasidim and some Sephardim use two holes; many others use one. It is purely custom, so follow yours. The options are listed in the tying menu on each product.

Step 3: thin or thick strings

Thin strings are neat and discreet under a shirt. Thick hand-spun strings have a fuller, traditional look and are preferred in some communities. Read thin vs thick tzitzit strings for the full comparison.

Step 4: size and fit

  1. Measure a shirt that fits you well, laid flat: chest width and length.
  2. Compare with the chart on the product page. Adult sizes run 18 (XS) to 28 (XXL); kids' sizes start at 8.
  3. Between sizes? Go up. Wool can shrink a little when washed.

Step 5: check the supervision

A wool tallit katan should be made from wool and tied for the mitzvah (lishmah) under reliable supervision. Our Badatz wool tallit katan is certified by the Badatz Eida Chareidit, and every garment we sell is tied under rabbinic supervision. See how to choose kosher tzitzit.

Frequently asked questions

What size wool tallit katan should I buy?

Measure a shirt that fits you well, laid flat, and compare it with the size chart on the product page. Adult sizes run from 18 (XS) to 28 (XXL). If you are between sizes, choose the larger one.

One hole or two holes?

It is a matter of custom. Many Chasidim and some Sephardim tie through two holes in each corner, while others use one. Our wool tallit katan lists the option with each tying style.

What is the difference between Chasidish and Ashkenazi tying?

Both follow the Ashkenazi winding count. Chasidish tying usually follows the Arizal-based pattern of winding in groups (chulyot), and many Chasidim tie through two holes. Ask your rabbi if you are unsure which you need.

Is a lamb wool tallit katan good for boys?
